Homemade DIY Chocolate Coconut Sugar Scrub

You’ve heard it before, our skin is the largest organ in our body. And if you care about the environment and living healthily, you may have heard that whatever you put on your skin, you should be able to eat.

The days of chemicals, synthetic preservatives, and fragrances need to be over - especially when the earth and you can benefit so much more from skin care products made from food and plants!

Experimenting with some pretty yummy ingredients, Amy Ippoliti decided to put the “edible skin care product” theory to the test and make myself a sugar scrub for the shower to help polish the skin. Exfoliation is so important, especially during the winter season when the air is getting drier and colder, to remove dead skin cells and keep your skin radiantly renewed.

Yield: Makes about 1.5 cups
Pre Time: About 10 minutes

Ingredients:
1 cup loosely packed Organic Nutiva Coconut Sugar
1/2 cup Organic Nutiva Coconut Oil (in solid form)
1/3 cup Organic Nutiva Hemp Oil
2 tablespoons unsweetened organic cocoa powder
10 drops of essential oil of your choice: (coconut extract and vanilla for soothing decadence, or mandarin and peppermint for energy and circulation)
Garnish with broken chocolate bar and/or raw cacao nibs!

Instructions: Put all ingredients together in a large bowl and mix until well combined. Use the back of a spoon or a spatula to get the coconut oil chunks to break down. To enjoy the scrub, simply rub it into your skin (not on your face) in a circular motion and rinse off! You can add more water to your skin to “reactivate” the mixture and keep scrubbing for an even better polish! The hemp and coconut oil is so moisturizing, you might find that once you towel off from the shower, no moisturizer is necessary to apply.

DIY Almond & Avocado Facial Scrubbing Mask

Did you know there are many fruits and vegetables that are fortifying for the skin, but are too tough to be blended by a standard mixer. Ingredients such as dates, beets and pesky flax seeds often end up chunky, however, the Dynablend—being the most powerful home blender with a solid glass pitcher and stainless steel scoop— is able to easily break down firm materials. This means that the Dynablend can not only mix the hardest of ingredients, but is also completely BPA-free (BPA stands for bisphenol A. BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. )—making it the perfect blender for natural, at-home skincare remedies.

Over the weekend I tried out a DIY Almond & Avocado Facial Scrubbing Mask with the Dynablend Blender. Avocado is beneficial to your skin in addition to your overall health. Avocado heals dryness on the skin, reduces age spots, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, and can even soothe skin affected by eczema.Almonds will make your skin feel smooth and soft and is a natural exfoliator.

Ingredients:
½ an avocado
¼ cup raw almonds
2 tablespoons of honey
2 tablespoons of sea salt
2 tablespoons of raw sugar
¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons of lime juice

Instructions:
Grind raw almonds in Tribest Dynablend until powdery. Add avocado pulp, honey and lime juice in blender while slowly mixing in olive oil with the stainless steel scoop. Once blended, scoop cream into a bowl and mix in salt and sugar using a wood spoon.

Apply a generous amount of cream to clean, makeup-less face. Scrub the mask over face (being sure to avoid the eyes) in a circular motion to exfoliate.

After a few minutes of exfoliating, apply the rest of the mask onto face and leave for about 15-20 minutes. Once the time is up, rinse with fresh water and pat dry!

DIY: Veiled Beanie

So technically I'm late on this trend, Its cool I don't follow them anyway! Jil Sander premiered the Veiled Beanie's in her Spring 2012 Runway Show. Rihanna and Miley Cyrus are a few celebrities that have been spotting rocking it. Right now I'm wearing box braids and I thought this would be a cute way to spice up my look. I found some easy instructions via American Eagle Blog. First thing tomorrow I'm headed to the Fabric Store.

You’ll need:

  • a slouchy knit beanie
  • 9″ x 24″ French veil netting
  • embroidery thread of a similar color
  • an embroidery needle
  • a pair of scissors
 Step One: Gather your materials.
Step Two: Cut the netted fabric into a piece that is almost half the height of the hat and 3 inches longer in width than the circumference of the hat.

Step Three: Wrap netting around the hat. The netting will overlap a little
Step Four: Pin the bottom of the netting to the bottom of the beanie. Sew the netting to the bottom of the beanie, making sure you sew both pieces of netting where they overlap and the hat.

Step Five: Take the top two layers of netting and fold down to the bottom of the hat as pictured and pin down again.

Step Six: Fold the netting down again and repin.

Step Seven: Sew the folding of the netting to the hat.

Step Eight: Secure the top of netting to the front center of the hat
