McDonald’s launches edgy street fashion with South African designer

Pop iconography is a big trend in fashion globally, and for the very first time ever fast-food giant McDonald’s has collaborated with a fashion designer to bring the golden arches to the runway. Timed as a celebration of the Big Mac’s 50th birthday, the playful street-wear collection by South African celebrity designer Gert-Johan Coetzee debuted at South African Fashion Week recently.

Back in 2014 Jeremy Scott incorporated a number of McDonald’s inspired garments in his first collection for Moschino, but this marks the first time the fast-‐food brand has officially sanctioned the use of its iconography in a designer fashion line. The range, which includes sequined T-shirts with the signature golden arches, sweatpants and cropped sweat tops, cute slogan T-‐shirts and even a sparkly golden tinsel jacket, has received rave reviews for Coetzee, who is known for his red-carpet couture gowns which has been worn internationally by the likes of Kourtney Kardashian and Kelly Rowland.  All the proceeds of the sale of the range, which includes mini-me kiddies’ versions to allow parents and their offspring to trend with twinning, is going to the Ronald McDonald House Charity. Coetzee, who is also the mentor on the South African version of Project Runway, has always been an active social campaigner, who also has his own bursary program for aspiring fashion designers.

“Having the opportunity to play with the iconography of such a huge global brand with the end goal of doing good, is such an honor, and it is a bonus that it is helping put South African fashion on the map globally,” says Coetzee.

At the present moment the range is only available in limited quantities, on shopgert.com.

Isaac Mizrahi to Launch Color and Skin-Care Line

Isaac Mizrahi is adding color cosmetics and skincare to his long list of endeavors. The line is called True Isaac Mizrahi and will be a 144-piece collection that will debut on February 9 on his QVC show, online at IsaacMizrahi.com and at retailer Beauty Brands. Once the rollout is complete, the line — which has an extensive range of lip, eye and face products — will be available in 150 stores.

“My color sense has always been my calling card,” Mizrahi told WWD regarding the large collection. “We’re not dipping a toe in the water, we’re jumping in the lake. And one of my goals as a designer has always been to get my customer to look in the mirror the right way. I don’t want her to buy this because it’s a big fantasy, but because she will look in the mirror and think she looks good.”
Mizrahi is no stranger to new business ventures. In 2002, he became one of the first designers to team up with Target to successfully create a women’s apparel line, and did so until 2008. In 2010, Isaac Mizrahi Live! began to air on QVC and in the fall of 2012, he launched a fragrance. So it is no surprise that he has big plans for this line, telling WWD, “We had about 150 things we had to cut in the line. I’d love to see the line tripled in both size and reach at this time next year.”

Nubian Heritage Launches Indian Hemp & Tamanu Strengthen and Grow Hair Collection

The most glamorous hairstyles take their toll on even the toughest tresses maintaining these looks often requires harsh chemicals and heat styling devices that can damage and weaken hair. Over time, lustrous hair can turn lackluster, becoming brittle and broken. Recognizing a need in the marketplace, Nubian Heritage has expanded its best-selling Indian Hemp &Tamanu Hair Care Collection with two new natural treatment products.Formulated with hemp, tamanu oil, bamboo, monoi oil, garlic extract, aloe vera, willow bark and certified organic sheaand mango butters, this blend aids in restoring moisture while conditioning, smoothing cuticles, protecting hair from breakage and supporting healthy growth.

Indian Hemp & Tamanu Strengthen & Grow Moisturizing Co-Wash($11.99; 12 oz.) is inspired by the century’s old Ayurvedic practice of co-washing to intensely hydrate hair and help balance the scalp. With bamboo, used in Chinese medicine to strengthen hair, and garlic extract, used by naturopaths in the Mediterranean to encourage growth, this surfactant-free treatment cleanses without detergentsor stripping natural oils. It’s ideal for those with coarse, dry strands, as well as women with textured and transitioning hair.

Indian Hemp & Tamanu Strengthen & Grow Moisturizing Curl Gel ($11.99; 10 oz.) creates sleek styles naturallywith ultra-moisturizing monoi oil, a beauty secret from Tahiti, tamanu oil, revered in Madagascar for its reparative benefits, and hemp oil, rich in fatty acids and vitamin E. The gel provides control, definition, manageability and brilliant shine, while reducing frizz and softening natural or chemically treated hair. Free of synthetic ingredients, the formulation doesn’t contain PVP/polymers or silicones found in many styling products that may cause buildup in hair.

“Our engaged community came to us requesting a natural styling product that offered versatility, so we added two products that bolster the health and appearance of their hair. We searched the globe looking for the best all-natural ingredients to promote healthy hair and scalp, and have added them into our formulations in a culturally authentic way to ensure our customers receive the traditional benefits,”says Richelieu Dennis, founder and CEO of Sundial Brands, makers of Nubian Heritage.
