My First Blavity Fest: A Weekend of Black Joy, Power & Style

I had the amazing opportunity to attend Blavity Fest for the very first time—and I can honestly say, it was everything I needed and more. A true celebration of Black excellence, creativity, and community, the festival brought together innovators, visionaries, and tastemakers from across the country in one powerful space. The energy was unmatched.

Blavity Fest is the result of a decade of intentional work to amplify Black voices and build spaces where we can connect, be inspired, and celebrate ourselves—and that mission was felt in every moment.

The Kickoff: A Fireside Chat That Set the Tone

The weekend started strong with a fireside chat between Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and Dr. Key Hallmon. Their conversation was full of gems about the importance of community-driven leadership, showing up for one another in powerful ways and much more. It was the perfect way to ground the fest in purpose and pride.

Wealth, Wellness, Creativity, and Music

What I loved most about Blavity Fest was how it catered to the whole person—mind, body, soul, and bank account. The programming covered everything from building legacy businesses to finding balance and prioritizing self-care. Whether it was panels on investing, wellness activations, or creative workshops, each experience reminded me just how much Black ingenuity is changing the world.

And let’s talk about the music—because the vibes were immaculate. Live performances lit up the stage, and the DJs kept the crowd moving all day long. Between the dancing, networking, and just vibing with like-minded people, it truly felt like a family reunion meets empowerment summit.

Pop-Ups, Panels & Powerful Moments

There were brand pop-ups, dope photo ops, and interactive spaces that sparked conversation and connection. I had so many inspiring moments—from laughing with new friends in line to soaking up wisdom from Black founders and creatives doing incredible work.

Let’s Talk Fashion: My Outfit Was a Whole Moment

Okay, I can’t end this post without spotlighting my Blavity Fest look—because let me tell you, the compliments were nonstop.

Hawks Shop and 'Honor Roll Clothing’ to Launch Limited-Edition Peach-Themed Apparel

 

In advance of Black History Month, the Hawks Shop, the official team store of the Hawks, collaborated with Atlanta Fashion Week to select local Black-owned business Honor Roll Clothing, a unisex lifestyle brand dedicated to utilizing creativity to challenge the perspective of culture, to design limited-edition apparel for fans. Inspired by the team’s PEACH City Edition uniforms, the joint effort involves a limited-edition shirt and hoodie designed by the co-founders of Honor Roll Clothing and the Hawks Brand Merchandising Department. These items are available for purchase at the Hawks Shop across from Gate 1 at State Farm Arena when the team takes on the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, Jan. 28.

“We are excited to team up Honor Roll Clothing for this limited-edition capsule which truly embodies the iconic Atlanta style while still repping the Hawks,” said Hawks’ Senior Vice President of Brand Merchandising Amy Serino. “By sharing our platform with this amazing brand, we continue to stay ‘True To Atlanta’ and empower local creators.”

In October of last year, the Hawks and Atlanta Fashion Week (ATLFW) identified Honor Roll Clothing as a local brand that goes beyond retail and supports the Atlanta community. Madewell x Fall 2019

It's August and eventually we'll have to say goodbye to summer. Even though I severely dislike the shorter, darker days. But despite the twinge of disappointment that September's arrival inevitably brings, there are a couple of  things that I love about Fall --- Pumpkin Spiced Latte's and Fashion. So let's get into this Madewell's fall collection.

Inspired by the likes of '60s and '70s icons Ali McGraw, Jane Birkin and Annie Hall (a.k.a. Diane Keaton), the upcoming season's collection combines patterns and colors from the American Southwest with androgynous prep school styling and strategic layering for a fun and imaginative array of pieces destined to become cold-weather wardrobe staples.

The brand's Head of Design Joyce Lee's inspiration for the collection isn't exactly subtle. Straight out of Birkin's playbook, there are ultra-high rise, wide-leg cords, striped t-shirts and effortless floral sundresses. Ali McGraw's beloved sense of style comes forth in the form of mix-matching patterns and plaid blazers plucked straight out of Yale's back-to-school catalogue. As for Annie Hall, there's no shortage of stolen-from-your-boyfriend-dad oversized trousers, crisp button-downs and classic oxfords scattered in the mix.

The gown is made of TARONI SPA blue crepe silk certified by the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS), which is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria.

The handmade embroidery by Vermont Paris required more than 450 hours of work, and is made of glass beads, Swarovski crystal shards and sequins respecting the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, an international quality label for harmless textiles.

To qualify as a RCGD Eco-conscious garment, each piece must either be made from sustainable materials, including organic, recycled or repurposed fibers. On Trend: Fanny Packs

Yes, the infamous fanny pack is back!!! Earlier this month eBay released a retrospective cultural milestones report, looking back on what products and trends really moved the needle on the marketplace last year. A big one was throwback streetwear, which the company describes as quintessential pieces from the eighties and nineties that are experiencing a renaissance among a new consumer—and the fanny pack was one of them. According to eBay, more than 57,000 fanny packs were purchased on the site in 2017. I'm actually excited and plan on rocking this trend very soon.
