Excitement Builds for the Met Gala: Celebrating Fashion, Art, and Dandyism!

As we approach one of the most glamorous nights in fashion—the Met Gala—it's time to delve into the rich cultural threads that shape this iconic event. This year, the spotlight finds its way to dandyism, a fashion style that resonates profoundly with Black culture, elegance, and individuality. Dandyism is more than just a clothing style; it is a statement of identity, creativity, and defiance.

Understanding Dandyism

Historically, dandyism originated in the early 19th century among British aristocrats. It represents a lifestyle defined by meticulous attention to dress and manners, where one’s appearance serves as a canvas for self-expression. However, for many artists and thinkers within the Black community, dandyism has evolved and transcended its origins, becoming a celebration of cultural heritage and personal style.

From the flamboyant suits to the sophisticated accessories, Black dandyism challenges the conventional boundaries of fashion. It showcases an unapologetic celebration of identity, challenging stereotypes and redefining masculinity through aesthetics that blend classic elegance with contemporary flair.

Dandyism's Influence at the Met Gala

The Met Gala has long served as a cultural touchstone, with celebrities showcasing extravagant outfits that often comment on societal themes. This year, as we anticipate the event, we see a resurgence in the representation of dandyism among Black designers and influencers. With the theme likely centering around the exploration of identity and expression, we can expect to witness an array of bold colors, elaborate tailoring, and innovative designs that pay homage to dandyism. Designers like Fred Butler, Pyer Moss, and Christian Siriano, who are known for their artistic and culturally informed approaches, will likely take center stage, demonstrating how Black dandyism continues to inspire and influence mainstream fashion.

A Celebration of Black Culture

As we celebrate the upcoming Met Gala, it's essential to recognize that dandyism is part of a broader narrative within Black culture—a narrative that honors resilience, creativity, and style. This form of expression not only resonates in high fashion but also reflects the everyday lives of individuals who embrace dandyism as a means of self-affirmation.

Whether through the sharpness of tailored suits, the elegance of vibrant colors, or the intricate details of accessories, dandyism is an art form that thrives in diversity and innovation. This year’s Met Gala provides a platform for these voices to share their stories through fashion, making it a celebration we cannot miss.

As the countdown to the Met Gala begins, let's appreciate the rich significance of dandyism in Black fashion. With every stitch and pattern, we are reminded of the culture, history, and creativity that fuel this style. It’s not just about the spectacle of haute couture; it's about the messages behind the garments and the spirit of those who wear them.

GET THE LOOK: Met Gala Hair Janelle Monae

Celebrity hairstylist Nikki Nelms created Janelle Monae's Met Gala hairstyle using Mielle Organics.

Inspiration - Her super tall, structural top knot was inspired by her exaggerated tweed tuxedo. I made a secure ponytail base to start then added wire and wrapped the hair around to create the height and structure. Throughout the updo, I pulled pieces out and re-wrapped into knots around the pre-wrapped hair to add dimension and depth. The final look led to a tall cylinder like structure.

We really wanted to make this look special since this will be the first Met Gala where her hair will be visible since 2017.

Prep for Janelle’s 2023 Met Gala hairstyle started with a calming wash using the Mielle Pomegranate & Honey Moisturizing and Detangling Shampooand Conditioner. This shampoo works into a luxurious lather and has an amazing scent. It cleans without stripping away moisture and pre-detangles curly hair, while the conditioner helps to achieve shiny, smooth-to-the-touch hair.

Once towel dried, I misted her hair with Mielle’s White Peony Leave-In Conditioner, and then I followed with the Mielle Mongongo Oil Thermal & Heat Protectant Spray before blow drying.

To style, I used the Mielle Avocado & Tamanu Anti-Frizz Stay Straight Serum before lightly straightening the hair. After the hair was up and sleek, I applied the Mielle Rice Water & Aloe Braid Gel. It was perfect to get a nice smooth base braid. I finished with the Pomegranate & Honey Blend Super Hold Edge Gel to get those edges laid down.

GET THE LOOK: Lena Waithe at The 2019 Met Gala

Rebekah Aladdin shares how she got Lena Waithe ready for the 2019 Met Gala.  INSPIRATION: Though Lena typically keeps her face simple, for the Met Gala festivities Aladdin included a red lip to honor Marsha P. Johnson, a highly regarded beacon within the gay liberation movement.

Lena's look was about clean flawless skin to compliment the burst of color on her lips. To accomplish this look, I focused on creating a beautiful base foundation using AJ Crimson Beauty Dual Skin Foundation mixed with Dermablend Flawless Creator Foundation. [After that] I used NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer to highlight under eyes, and Dermablend Loose Setting Powders to set her face. I [then] used MAC Cosmetics‘ Mineralize Skinfinish Powder in “Dark Deepest” to create a soft contour around the perimeter of her forehead, cheekbones and the bridge of her nose. I finished off the look with Huda Beauty Demi Matte Cream Lipstick in “Boy Collector.”

Chrissy Teigen stunned on the red carpet at the Met Gala last night donning a jet black gown and Chinese-inspired earrings to stick with the Gala’s theme.  What really made Teigen the bell of the ball, however, was her flawless beauty look, from her waved hair to her perfectly manicured nails, which were done by manicurist Chi under the direction of celebrity manicurist and Dermelect Color Curator, Elle, using top nail brand Dermelect Cosmeceuticals.

Elle opted for a dark burgundy on Teigen’s nails which she finished with Dermelect’s Revital-Oil, a part essential oil and part Keratin solution nail treatment that is specifically formulated to support natural nail growth as it perfects the cuticle. “I never leave the house without my Dermelect Revital-Oil cuticle oil and same goes for my clients” says Elle.

Elle’s team also worked on A-list celebs including Jennifer Lopez, Katie Holmes and Georgina and Karen of Marchesa. As Jennifer was leaving, she asked Elle for some oil as a finishing touch. Luckily Elle doesn’t leave home without Dermelect!

GET THE LOOK: Joan Smalls Bold Purple Lip

Joan Smalls made a bold beauty statement with a dark lip last night at the 2014 Met Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The mastermind behind this beautiful look is makeup artist Sir John.

Joan rocked 'Rouge in Love - French Ballerine' Lipstick by Lancome'

On who’s idea that purple lip was…

“She’s a little tanned right now, so we wanted to play up a glowing radiance, post-sun look, but the purple lip was Joan’s idea. For me, it was really about finding the texture, because she didn’t want anything glossy. We mixed colors together and got really creative. She saw the lip on Instagram. She follows beauty addicts and we compared makeup war stories and found the perfect purple that wasn’t too burgundy and wasn’t too, you know, cheap-looking.”
