I Neglected My Purpose to Perform
Whether
it is through writing, video/film, fashion or public speaking- I have always
used creativity to express myself. For the past 15 years, I’ve been an avid
“journal-writer” and more recently, my journals have transformed into messages
to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. God gives me revelation to comfort me or
to comfort someone that I’m praying for. Then He gives me a strategy to share it
with the world [2 Corinthians 1:3]. For that reason, I cannot attempt to journal
if I’m not receiving revelation knowledge about my own life or the life of
someone else. While my purpose of journaling remains the same, my platforms and
delivery often change. The moment I started preparing my first article for itsarkeedah.com
was the moment I began to transform my purpose
of writing these articles into a mere performance.
One
may ask, what is the difference between purpose and performance? Purpose is the reason for which
something exists and performance is
entertainment presented before an audience. Those who operate on purpose aim to please God while those
who perform aim to please “man”. The
beautiful thing about God is He will place you on platforms that will attract
people who desire your purpose. It’s
pretty much a “win-win” situation; a performer takes risk after risk hoping to
entertain their audience.
Before
I started writing this article I asked God what I should write. He instantly
replied, “What are you dealing with? Don’t write to accommodate an audience.
Just like before, sit with me & allow me to comfort you in your issues so
that you can share the information on whatever platform I blessed you with.” I
started to seek God to perform a task
rather than to simply LIVE and God had to remind me of my purpose. For this reason, this series is entitled “Confessions.” I will
share wisdom that I receive from my issues [both past and present] and/or
issues of those I pray for in order to enhance the lives of others.
Below
is an inspiring quote by an award-winning singer and now Cover Girl, Janelle Monae.
Monae addresses her purpose for wearing her black and white uniform when
honored at the Black Girls Rock Awards and states,
“When I started my
music career, I was a maid. I used to clean houses. My mother was a proud
janitor. My stepfather, who raised me like his very own, worked at the post
office and my father, was a trash man. They all wore uniforms and that’s
why I stand here today, in my black and white, and I wear my uniform to honor
them. This is a reminder that I have work to do. I have people to uplift. I
have people to inspire. And today, I wear my uniform proudly as a Cover Girl.
I want to be clear, young girls, I didn’t have to change who I was to become a
Cover Girl”.
Remember,
platforms must adapt to purpose and not vice versa. Continue to fulfill your
God-given assignments DAILY and expect many doors will open enabling you to
share your purpose with the world. Don’t make my mistake and neglect your
purpose to perform.
