Kandi Burruss Covers Essence October Issue

ESSENCE’s October cover features singer and Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss – her first ESSENCE cover! The singer, songwriter restaurateur, entrepreneur, Real Housewives of Atlanta star and mother lets ESSENCE in on the art of the hustle and how she’s surviving drama while building a legacy.

The issue goes on-sale Friday, September 22

COVER QUOTES
On the frailty of fame: “It’s a very humbling moment when your songs aren’t on the radio anymore. I didn’t appreciate what that success was when we had it. I remember feeling like, when I get things back the way I want them to be, I will never take anything for granted again.”

On how public betrayal made her rethink doing RHOA: “…I honestly had a lot of times when I just cried. There were moments when I really wanted to say, ‘You know what? I’m done with this!’ I was vindicated in front of millions, which helped me to feel comfortable again…”

Comparing single motherhood to her current blended family: “…as Riley got older, I saw that there were things she did miss, not having her dad really there. Now this is even better. We’re a whole family—we’ve got Riley, Kaela [Tucker’s 21-year-old daughter from a previous relationship] and Ace [the couple’s 21-month-old son.]”

On “grinding like she’s broke” and building and empire: “Some of us are doers and some of us are just dreamers. I’m both. I’m trying to build so that I can set up my children to have great futures. All of these different companies that we have, I would love for them to be passed down from generation to generation. I want my kids to be leaders.”

RHOA Executive Producer Andy Cohen on Burress’ reality TV career: “She’s lived through so much in front of the camera and she’s had an incredible amount of drama, but through it all she’s been exactly herself.”

Gabrielle Union x New York & Company

Looks like I'm going to be making my way to New York & Company! Gabrielle Union and New York & Company have joined forces to launch her own namesake collection in August 2017!

The 7th Avenue Design Studio collection was inspired by Being Mary Jane, produced by and starring Gabrielle Union. Her character, Mary Jane Paul, a successful TV news anchor embodies what the brand represents. “”Mary Jane’s style reflects power, leadership, and risk taking,” Gabrielle explains in a statement. “She wears classic styles but with a twist, which is why I think she’d definitely shop at New York & Company.”

In addition, Union will expand her partnership by launching an exclusive namesake collection that will be designed by the award-winning actress. “Our customers will relate to Gabrielle. She has worked hard to establish a successful career and is both, aspirational and inspirational to our consumer. Gabrielle’s collection will be unlike anything our customers have ever seen from us,” Greg Scott, CEO of NY&C said in a statement. “Adding her brand to our portfolio will strongly appeal to our loyal clients and will also attract new customers to our brand. It will be significant to our growth strategy in 2017.”

Union also shared her excitement for the new collection. “I am excited to work with a brand that’s known for embracing diversity and that caters specifically to women—especially women who want to look on-point without breaking the bank. I can’t wait to show everyone what I’ve been working on!”

Tinashe Named Face Of MAC's 'Future Forward' Campaign

"M·A·C pairs up with a powerful generation of women who are reshaping music's future in a series of exclusive collaborations. From the crusading pop up Halsey to the soulful R&B/pop jams of Tinashe and Lion Babe's modern funk to DeJ Loaf's electrifying rap, each visionary female taps into the core of her own creative force through a limited edition colour statement."

On March 17, they'll launch Future Forward, the first of an ongoing series of collaborations and campaigns that spotlight newer talent who are making waves within the music industry.

“It feels like a great thing to be able to support artists who are breaking through but aren’t necessarily at the top top, to push them forward,” Senior Vice President and Group Creative Director James Gager says of the initiative. “We’ve always done that sort of thing with fashion designers, and to me, it’s most interesting to introduce these artists, as well as our M·A·C fans, to new people."

For the debut capsule, Gager worked with artists Tinashe, Dej Loaf, Lion Babe’s Jillian Hervey and Halsey -- most of whom landed on the Billboard charts for the first time last year.
“They run the gamut, but obviously they're hitting different people in terms of who listens to their music,” he notes. “I think it shows a breadth of what M·A·C is about. When [the artists] came into the office, they each had unique personalities: one of them was very shy, another very outspoken."
The products are a reflection of their differences.

The rollout will start with Tinashe, who worked on the "Times Nine Palette" of eye shadow ($32; maccosmetics.com), which borrows names for each shade from track names like "All Hands On Deck."
"I was really intrigued by the chance to bring my creative vision to this," says the R&B artist who is about to embark on a world tour for her forthcoming sophomore album, Joyride. "I got to design the packaging, pick out the colors and create something that I felt like I would use."

Kate Winslet on Divorce, Fame & Body Image in WSJ. Magazine

Academy award-winning actress Kate Winslet graces the cover of WSJ. Magazine's October issue. In the candid interview, Winslet -- who stars in the Steve Jobs movie debuting next week -- talks about her failed marriages, why she doesn't consider herself a movie star and the reason she keeps her Oscar in the bathroom. The Hollywood icon also talks about how she prepared for her latest role and why she was so passionate about landing it in the first place.

KATE WINSLET ON:
  • Keeping the details of her divorces private : “No one really knows what has happened in my life. No one really knows why my first marriage didn’t last; no one knows why my second didn’t. And I’m proud of those silences.”
  • Failed marriages: “I know lots of people who are not in the public eye who have gone through several marriages, I really do, and it’s just those are the cards that life dealt me. I didn’t plan on its being that way . And f— me, it hasn’t been easy, you know.”
  • Her husband, Ned Rocknroll: “Thank God for Ned—really. He’s just so incredibly supportive, and he’s so much fun. He’s absolutely everything to me. And to all of us.”
  • Dealing with tabloid attention: “No one teaches you, and also no one particularly helps you . It’s a very specific thing to ask people to understand. ‘So-and-so was mean about me in the newspaper.’ ‘Oh, just ignore it.’ But you can’t, because it’s not true. "
  • Preferring not to be referred to as a movie star: “I’ve always been so uncomfortable with that. I just don’t feel like one, and I don’t live like one either— not the way I imagine a proper movie star living.”
  • Why she keeps her Oscar in the bathroom: “The whole point is for everybody to pick it up and go, ‘I’d like to thank my son and my dad’—and you can always tell when someone has, because they’re in there a little bit longer after they flushed. They’ll come out looking slightly pink-cheeked. It’s hysterical.”
  • Her immediate reaction when she lands a role: “The first thing I do is panic . "
  • Body image and health: “We all focus on our bodies in our late teens and our early 20s, in a way that is just not cool or healthy. In your 30s, you become aware of staying fit. Now I view my physical self as an instrument that I have to keep going because I’m a mother, and I have to be as healthy as I can for those three people who need me—more than I need for myself to be in a f—ing nude scene.”

The issue hits newsstands on October 10

GET THE LOOK: ABC Black-ish Yara Shahidi for Teen Choice Awards 2015

Yara is currently wearing box braids so hair stylist Tiffany Daugherty decided to go with something up but still young and fun for the Teen Choice Awards 2015.

She started by using Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Shampoo & Conditioner. Black Castor Oil's rich omega oil content has reparative benefits for the hair and scalp, and this allows Yara's hair and scalp to remain healthy while wearing a protective style.

Once her hair was dried, using the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Scalp Serum I oiled the scalp all over and gently massaged the scalp. Healthy scalp = healthy hair

The 2015 Teen Choice Awards was the perfect platform for a fresh, clean face for Yara Shahidi. Thanks to Shea Moisture, makeup artist Brandy Allen created a beautiful and vivid look to match her colorful wardrobe.

First, I wanted to choose the right eye-shadow shade that was age appropriate and red carpet pretty. I chose the smokey night palette. even though the name seems more mature, there was a soft pink that complimented the cool colors in her dress.

I then concentrated on her skin, using Sheer Foundation in Toffee and a foundation brush first to cover and balance any marks. Then I used a fluffy brush to blend and sheer down her foundation to a healthy, natural skin finish.

For her cheeks, I took the blush in the smokey palette and added her lipstick color 'Roberta' with my thumbs on her cheeks. When doing this, it's great to work the product in with your fingers so it melts in her skin and has a fresh, semi-dewy finish.

Lastly, because she's still a teenager I wanted this look to be consumer friendly and  easy to replicate at home. I wanted her natural lips to have minimal to no coverage but a hint of hot pink. So, I used Shea Moisture's lip stain in 'Nicola' and finished with its complimenting clear gloss.

Pat McGrath Transforms Kim Kardashian-West into Cleopatra for The Violet Files

On the latest cover of The Violet Files, the editorial site of Hollywood insider and beauty guru Cassandra Grey, Kim Kardashian West is transformed into the iconic Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra through the artistry and makeup design by Pat McGrath.

“I would have done anything—I would have trusted Pat’s vision no matter what she wanted—but I was really excited that it was the Cleopatra vibe,” says Kim Kardashian West of the collaboration with makeup artist Pat McGrath.
“Elizabeth Taylor’s makeup in Cleopatra has been re-created countless times, but for Kim I wanted to create an interpretation that has never been done before, a futuristic 3D version,” Ms. McGrath explains. “I wanted to portray a luxurious decadence by using elements of ornate facial jewelry constructed into shapes that pay homage to Egyptian culture, and of course to the rich exotic character that Taylor portrayed in this role.”

“Her eyeshadow was made from ground lapis stone and gold pyrite flecks,” notes Ms. McGrath. “Incorporating three-dimensional gold metal into the makeup design explores the concept of makeup as jewelry. I wanted the images to be luxurious, evoking a modern take on the opulence associated with Cleopatra’s makeup.”
The images, shot by Ben Hassett, are the first installment in a series for VIOLET GREY in which Ms. McGrath will reimagine paragons of old Hollywood glamour with new faces.

Emma Stone on the Sony Hack, Woody Allen & More in WSJ. Magazine

Oscar-nominated actress Emma Stone, who has a lead role in Woody Allen's upcoming film, Irrational Man, graces the cover of WSJ. Magazine's July/August issue. In her interview with Josh Eells, Stone talks about why it's "terrifying" to work with Allen; the Sony Pictures hack and how she reacted when her phone number and email address were published; and the reason why she didn't flip around the bag with actor Andrew Garfield's name on it when she recently left their stylist's office. Stone also discusses her major pet peeves, how she's choosing her next roles and why acting helped her combat the anxieties she suffered growing up. In addition to the article, Stone is featured in a WSJ. Q&A video where she chooses between pairs of options such as "Bradley Cooper or Ryan Gosling," "Batman or Superman" and "Paparazzi or colonoscopy."

Woody Allen is also interviewed in the article.

The article is now available online, while the July/August issue hits newsstands on Saturday, June 27.

EMMA STONE ON:

Carrying a bag labeled with actor Andrew Garfield's name on it from their shared stylist's office: “See, I never talk about this stuff for this exact reason—because it’s all so speculative and baseless. Once you start responding—once you’re like, ‘No, that’s not true’—then they’re like, ‘Well, if we push enough, we’ll get a comment, so let’s see what else we can make up.’ I understand the interest in it completely, because I’ve had it, too. But it’s so special to me that it never feels good to talk about, so I just continually don’t talk about it.”

Admitting she could have flipped the bag around to avoid speculation:  “When I picked up the bag, I was like, ‘This is kind of funny if there are any [paparazzi] out there.’ There’s probably some rebelliousness that comes out in me after all these stories and people texting you for weeks about something that, for the most part, is not true. But even when it’s false, I would rather just let it be false.”

Her reaction to her phone number and email address being published on WikiLeaks after the Sony Pictures hack:  "Then I did one of the worst things ever, which was react really quickly. I was getting all these emails and texts from people I didn’t know—‘Hi, I’m Joe from the U.K. I like your movies’—and I was so overwhelmed that I went to my inbox and I deleted all my emails. In about a 30-second span, I hit ‘Select All’ and ‘Delete Forever,’ and thousands of emails, like six years of emails, are now gone forever. I was just so freaked out that someone was in there...It was horrible. I cried for like an hour. Most of the emails I’m mourning I can still talk to the person and get them back. But there’s others where the person is actually gone. It really sucks."

Working with Woody Allen (in films such as Magic in the Moonlight and Irrational Man):  “It’s terrifying. He doesn’t do table reads or any rehearsal. You can’t even ask questions about your character, because he’ll be like: ‘You know this is a movie, right?’”

Not preparing an Oscar speech when she was nominated for her role in Birdman:  “Are you out of your mind? Are you actually insane? Patricia Arquette had that thing locked up!”

Growing up with anxiety and suffering panic attacks:  “It was really bad. The first time I had a panic attack I was sitting in my friend’s house, and I thought the house was burning down. I called my mom and she brought me home, and for the next three years it just would not stop. I would go to the nurse at lunch most days and just wring my hands. I would ask my mom to tell me exactly how the day was going to be, then ask again 30 seconds later. I just needed to know that no one was going to die and nothing was going to change.”

How acting helped alleviate her anxiety:  “There’s something about the immediacy of acting. You can’t afford to think about a million other things. You have to think about the task at hand. Acting forces me to sort of be like a Zen master: What is happening right in this moment?”

Reaching a milestone in her acting career:  “There’s this insane thing that happens where you get to a point where you start not just doing things because you’re lucky to have gotten the job, but you actually start making choices. ”

How she chooses which roles she takes:  “But recently I’m starting to enjoy having experiences that I wouldn’t allow myself to have in real life—like Sally onstage, and the kind of mental breakdown she goes through. To do that in front of an audience was super liberating. I’m interested in things that are really scary and ambitious lately. Obviously Birdman was like that. And then doing the play, I was like, ‘This feels like it could totally go wrong every single day.’ And something about that feels vital. Is that a stupid thing to say?”

Passing on the all-female Ghostbusters movie : “The script was really funny. It just didn’t feel like the right time for me. A franchise is a big commitment—it’s a whole thing. I think maybe I need a minute before I dive back into that water.”

Playing a villain in the future: “That would be amazing. I would love that.”

WOODY ALLEN ON:

What he thought the first time he saw Emma Stone in "one of those young people’s movies” while exercising on the  treadmill:  “My God, this girl is remarkable.”

Emma Stone's talent and bright future in Hollywood: “She’s so good in everything. I see a lot of the best traits of Diane Keaton in her— Keaton was someone who could be in The Godfather and movies with Meryl Streep but also do comedy and sing and dance. I think Emma has the potential to be one of the biggest female stars for years.”

His preference not to interact with the actors in his films: “I never talk to any of the actors in any of my movies about anything if I can avoid it.”

NCLA x Beyoncé Collaboration

On December 2nd, Beyoncé shared images from her collaboration with NCLA on her website.

Her debut line contains four different designs, all inspired by her work. "I Woke Up Like This" is a plaid pattern, based on the shirt she wears in her "***Flawless" video; "Je Ne Sais Quoi" is covered with the neon signs seen in "Blow;" "No Rest In the Kingdom" is reminiscent of the Tom Ford jumpsuit she wore to receive her MTV Video Vanguard Award; and "I Come with a Side of Trouble" is scribbled over with the entire track listing of her latest album.
